Kass: Mayor O'Bama? Yes he can!

John Kass, Chicago Tribune

November 5, 2010

Those Republicans aren't done giving our president a shellacking, and now the Washington media is urging him to reveal his "feelings," hoping he'll squirt a few tears for the cameras.

So there's only one thing for President Barack Obama to do:

Quit.

Yes, quit. Obama should return from India — after paying that whopping Taj Mahal Palace hotel bill for his entourage out of his own pocket — and resign the presidency immediately.

Then he can come home and do something truly productive.

Like run for mayor of Chicago.

I'm not kidding. After two years as president, Obama finally has some executive experience, which now qualifies him for the mayor's job.

It just doesn't look like Washington is going to be much fun for the guy. Especially with all those newly elected Republicans led by the Speaker of the Tan lining up to fight him by invoking "the will of the people."

Will of the people? Not in Chicago. Obama shouldn't have to stick around Washington and deal with that kind of aggravation.

And what about all those Washington parliamentary tricks? We have them in Chicago, too, but they're real simple.

For example, this "don't ask, don't tell" business. It's been a huge headache for Obama, with every policy wonk in Washington giving opinions on how it should be implemented.

In Chicago, "don't ask don't tell" is easy. Here's how it works:

If you're the mayor, nobody better ask you a dang thing. And if they ever dare ask, you don't have to tell them doodly squat.

All you have to do is grunt and make a funny face, and taxpayers become hypnotized and they say, "Oh, but he's the mayor."

Same with that "cap and trade" stuff.

In Washington, Obama's "cap and trade" policy got him into trouble. It's an intricate system of taxes, allowing Wall Street insiders to get rich trading "carbon credits," while the rest of us are forced to read under the feeble light of a 5-watt bulb.

In Chicago, "cap and trade" isn't complicated. Every politician knows that if you go into "trade" with the Chicago Outfit and then break your deal, you'll probably get "capped."

Just ask the late Mayor Anton Cermak.

And then there's this "deem and pass" maneuver in Congress. Democrats once threatened to use it to ram the president's controversial Obamacare legislation into law.

"Washington gets very concerned with these procedures in Congress," Obama explained months ago. "This is always an issue whether Republicans are in charge or Democrats are in charge."

Oh, really? Well, as he knows quite well, in Chicago there are no Republicans in office to speak of.

In fact, Republicans are an endangered species, so rare that biologists from the National Geographic Society are planning an expedition to trap some outside the Union League Club.

Scientists will fix tracking devices to their earlobes and catalog their movements, to determine once and for all if corporate Republicans can actually mate with tea partiers.

A few of the tamer corporate Republicans are allowed to eat in restaurants and drive cars, if they laugh at the mayor's jokes, but that's about it.

Here, with no real opposition, Chicago mayors have their own "deem and pass."

The mayor deems something, and just like that, it's passed. Just look at that city parking meter lease deal and all that cash getting passed to Abu Dhabi.

We also have an added feature. It's called "deem and destroy."

The mayor can deem he wants to destroy something — an airport, a private business, even an entire section of, say, Elk Grove Village — and poof. It's gone. The courts go along because only suckers beef.

Clearly, Obama should resign the presidency and come home and really do something with his life.

Oh, you know he'll shrug and say that he's already given the mayor's job to his good buddy and former chief of staff, our very own Rahmfather™, Rahm Emanuel.

I'm not saying that Emanuel isn't qualified. After all, Rahm did spend two years running the country while Obama learned to use the teleprompter.

But now, after just a few years in Washington — much of it campaigning — Obama's got to be sick of that town. His every move is questioned. He must contend with those annoying "checks and balances."

What's worse, political opponents speak their mind. And Washington reporters have evolved into meat eaters and seem determined to make him cry.

Just look at the headlines over his big India trip. American taxpayers are shrieking about the costs. Reports from the always-reliable Indian media claim the trip will cost $200 million a day, along with a fleet of warships and aircraft carriers, not counting hotel pay-per-view and mini-bar expenses for the entourage.

Just think what taxpayers will say when they learn the cost of the macadamia nuts alone.

White House aides call such accusations absurd. But notice they're not denying the part about the Indian government's oppressive and costly street monkey "relocation project" in Delhi.

If Obama were mayor of Chicago, none of this would be a problem. He could skip work every other week, go on trips all over the world, and his friends could come along and pay for his stays in lavish villas, with contractors and political contributors.

And no one would have a thing to say. Why?

Don't ask, don't tell.

It sure beats Washington.

So he should hand the reins of government over to Vice President Joe Biden, leave that swamp of nuanced politics, and come home to the uncomplicated city where hope began.

I can see it now.

Mayor O'Bama?

Yes you can.
